SALIENT FEATURES (ARRIVING / SAILING) | ||||
ANCHORAGE | Sand Heads, Sagar Road, Diamond Harbour | |||
APPROACH | Guided by the river pilot as per the River Hooghly draft issued by the port authority periodically. | |||
TIDES | Drafts on the River Hoogly depend on the fluctuating tide and conditions of the governing bars. The maximum permissible drafts at the respective periods are June to October springs 8.70 metres neaps 8 metres, October to June springs 8.20 metres neaps 6.7 metres. | |||
WEATHER | Monsoon from June to October. Occasional rain and depression from Mid-October to early December and from early February to May. | |||
PILOTAGE | A. Pilotage is compulsory throughout the long riverine channel from pilot station to approch of lock gate entrance which is navigated by qualified pilot of Calcutta Port Trust only. | |||
B. The pilot station is located at lower gasper which is about 85 kms. from Calcutta Dock approach. | ||||
C. A pilot vessel is always cruising on duty at pilot station for pilot embarkation / disembarkation. Vessels on arrival at sandheads are required to contact the pilot vessel Ch.16 call sign “V W S T”. Presently a distance of approx. 53 kms. inside the river channel being navigated by the ship with the help of VTMS controlled automatically. | ||||
D. On arrival at garden reach the river pilot embarks and hands over the vessel to the harbour pilot. Harbour pilot then embarks and hands over the vessel to the berthing master at Calcutta dock lock gate approach for final berthing inside docks. | ||||
PORT CRAFT | KOPT is having adequate number of tug boats available for usage in the river and inside the dock. | |||
