ANCHORAGE LOADING IS ALSO CARRIED OUT AT OUTER ANCHORAGE USING TRANFER VESSELS (T/V). THERE ARE NO RESTRICTIONS FOR VESSEL LOADING AT OUTER ANCHORAGE, HOWEVER  MAXIMUM AIR DRAFT OF THE MOTHER VESSEL IS TO BE KNOWN DEPENDING ON THE AVAILABILITY OF THE TRANSFER VESSELS.
APPROACH IT IS AN OPEN-TYPE HARBOUR PROTECTED BY A BREAKWATER AND ALSO BY A MOLE BUILT EASTWARD FROM THE OUTER END OF THE BREAKWATER RUNNING PARALLEL TO THE  QUAY. THIS AFFORDS PROTECTION FROM TURBULENT SEA DURING THE S-W MONSOON. THE PORT IS SERVED BY TWO MAJOR NAVIGABLE RIVERS ZUARI AND MANDOVI, WHICH ARE ALSO INTERCONNECTED BY CUMBARJUA CANAL. THE NAVIGATIONAL CHANNEL CONNECTING THE OPEN SEA WITH THE HARBOUR IS ABOUT 5 KM. IN LENGTH, 250M IN WIDTH AND 13.7 M. DEEP WITH A TURNING BASIN OF ABOUT 480 M. DIAMETER LOCATED EAST OF THE MOLE, AND MARKED BY LIGHTED BUOYS.
TIDES THE STRENGTH OF THE CURRENT EITHER AT FLOOD OR EBB DOES NOT GENERALLY EXCEED 1 KNOT. SWELL/WAVES DURING THE FAIR SEASON RARELY EXCEED 2M. IN THE OPEN  SEA, THE DIRECTION BEING MAINLY TOWARDS THE WEST AND N-W. HOWEVER, DURING THE MONSOON, THE SWELL/WAVES GO UPTO 3M., THE DIRECTION BEING MAINLY FROM THE S-W. NORMAL WIND FORCE VARIES FROM 4-7 ON THE BEAUFORT SCALE.
WEATHER THERE ARE TWO DISTINCT SEASONS – THE FAIR SEASON FROM OCTOBER TO MAY, AND THE MONSOON FROM JUNE TO SEPTEMBER, DURING WHICH AN AVERAGE 250 CMS OF RAINFALL IS REGISTERED.

To approach Hazira roads, tide is not required. Tide is required while berthing to Essar/Adani and Magdalla port i.e. for outer Hazira/inner Hazira and Magdalla

WEATHER

During monsoon season i.e. 15th of May to 15th Sept of the year, all lighterage operation/cargo loading discharging work at Hazira anchorage closed as port closed during monsoon season.

PILOTAGE

At Essar /Adani port and Shell Hazira port, pilotage are provided respective port authorities as Shell Hazira and Adani Hazira both private port and Essar is captive jetty. To approach to Hazira roads pilotage not required.

PORT CRAFT

Private ports and captive jetty, they have their owned tug boat/craft for vessel berthing-unberthing and other use. From port GMB side there is no any craft/tug boat etc.

 

NIGHT NAVIGATION

Night navigation is allowed at Essar/Adani & Sheel Hazira. Only approach to Magdalla port jetty, night navigation not allowed during monsoon season i.e. 15th of May to 15th Sept of the year.

SALIENT FEATURES (ARRIVING / SAILING)
ANCHORAGE Vessels generally anchor at sandheads from where the vessel are guided by river pilot to the Haldia outer lock from where the berthing master guides the vessel to the destined berth.
APPROACH The channel to Haldia at present accepts vessels upto a depth of 9.5 m (max). The harbour master 6 weeks in advance publishes the draft forecast. The dock system being served by one lock gate with 2 (two) electrically operated caissons type gates with a clear length of 300.40m between outer and inner gates. Lock barrel width 39.65m & depth 10.37m below lowest low water. Ships having max. LOA 231.71m. &33.54m. beam can negotiate. Lead-in-jetty 335.50m. in length facilitates maneuvering. Turning basin of 549m. diameter & depth available in docks 13.72m.
TIDES Being a riverine port it’s always dependent on tides (range from 2 to 4m), which restricts the no. of inward / outward of vessels per day.
WEATHER Sunny with monsoon during the period June to Mid-September
PILOTAGE Pilotage is compulsory throughout the long riverine channel from pilot station to approch of lock gate entrance and is navigated by qualified pilot of Calcutta Port Trust only. The pilot station is located at lower gasper which is about 35 kms. from Haldia dock approch. A pilot vessel is always cruising on duty at pilot station for pilot embarkation / disembarkation. Vessels on arrival at sandheads are required to contact the pilot vessel Ch.16 call sign VWST. Presently a distance of approx. 53 kms. inside the river channel being navigated by the ship with the help of VTMS controlled automatically. On arrival at Haldia lock gate approch the river pilot embarks and hands over the vessel to berthing master for final berthing inside docks.

APPROACH Guided by the river pilot as per the River Hooghly draft issued by the port authority periodically.
TIDES Drafts on the River Hoogly depend on the fluctuating tide and conditions of the governing bars. The maximum permissible drafts at the respective periods are June to October springs 8.70 metres neaps 8 metres, October to June springs 8.20 metres neaps 6.7 metres.
WEATHER Monsoon from June to October. Occasional rain and depression from Mid-October to early December and from early February to May.
PILOTAGE A. Pilotage is compulsory throughout the long riverine channel from pilot station to approch of lock gate entrance which is navigated by qualified pilot of Calcutta Port Trust only.
B. The pilot station is located at lower gasper which is about 85 kms. from Calcutta Dock approach.
C. A pilot vessel is always cruising on duty at pilot station for pilot embarkation / disembarkation. Vessels on arrival at sandheads are required to contact the pilot vessel Ch.16 call sign “V W S T”. Presently a distance of approx. 53 kms. inside the river channel being navigated by the ship with the help of VTMS controlled automatically.
D. On arrival at garden reach the river pilot embarks and hands over the vessel to the harbour pilot. Harbour pilot then embarks and hands over the vessel to the berthing master at Calcutta dock lock gate approach for final berthing inside docks.
PORT CRAFT KOPT is having adequate number of tug boats available for usage in the river and inside the dock.
